Delphi or Meteora: which one to choose?

Two of the most asked-about places in Greece, often compared because both make for a strong day or two outside Athens. They are very different.

What you actually see

Delphi is ancient ruins on the side of Mount Parnassus, with a view down to the Gulf of Corinth. The Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, the theatre, the stadium, and one of Greece's best museums.

Meteora is six functioning monasteries built on top of vertical sandstone pillars. The landscape itself is the attraction; the monasteries are the human response to it.

How long it takes from Athens

Delphi: 2.5 hours one way. Doable as a long day trip; better with one overnight in Arachova.

Meteora: 4.5 hours one way. Realistically needs at least one overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki.

Which one for which traveler

First-time Greece, history-focused: Delphi. The site is more meaningful with a guide.

Photography, dramatic landscapes, hiking: Meteora.

Combining culture and the sea: Delphi wins easily - Itea is 15 minutes away, the gulf is right there.

Can you do both?

Yes, but plan three days minimum. One way: Athens → Delphi (1 night, Arachova) → drive north to Meteora (1 night) → back to Athens. The drive Delphi to Meteora is around 3 hours.

Our honest take

If you have one day outside Athens, choose Delphi and add a half-day boat trip from Itea. You get the ancient site, the museum, the mountain, and the sea - all in 24 hours. Meteora deserves its own dedicated trip.

Common questions

Is Meteora worth the long drive?

Yes, but only if you sleep there. Doing it as a day trip from Athens is exhausting.

Can I see both in one day?

No. They are too far apart for a single day.

Which is more crowded?

Meteora in summer can be very busy at the popular monasteries. Delphi spreads out more.
